GROWING PLACES

THE FIRST EVER, AUGUST 1 2009

A Rousing Success!

Growing Places was a celebration of San Diego's food and an exploration of creative solutions to the system. It combined, community, food, art, food, music and food!

Thanks to you, we raised over $3000 for our farm project, 50% above our goal!

View the video of the discussion!

The video is about 50 minutes long and includes a public exploration of the challenges we face in the many diverse angles of the web that is our food system. With people representing the farming side, the consuming side, the monetary side, the justice side, the access side, the water side, the fossil fuels side, and the political side, the dialogue was robust and covered a lot of ground in a short time. This is a way to get to know some of the people doing most important work in this city to make it more healthy and more real... All of these folks deserve our accolades and thanks.

Many thanks to Ben Bruckman for filming and editing this, and to everyone who participated in this stimulating discussion!

Many more thanks!

to everyone who made art

it was wonderful to have such a variety of perspectives and styles, and felt good to have an outpouring of donations from the community, some from folks who are already involved in the food movement and some from people who are just beginning. art is a great way to connect and we thank you for donating your passion to help us raise money for farmland.
*note! we still have some pieces that need to get to people who won the bidding

to everyone who helped set up/break down

for those of you who came to the event you could see how much it took to transform that office space... it was done with a team of over 20 people spending time making decorations, painting the elevator, moving tables and stuff, and hundreds of other tasks. in the end, it all came together in a beautiful and super fun way. the place had good vibes and people felt excited when they came in. thank you to everyone who spent time helping us put this on (superstar mention goes to joann cofrancesco and paul maschka and angelo haynes)

to everyone who donated their skills

thanks to josh brown for the good sound and to ben bruckman for taking video. also, thanks to the bands for donating fantastic performances! Unum, Old Man Hands, Skavolutionary Orchestra... everyone sounded awesome and absolutely made for a really great night.

to the people who lead workshops and spoke in the discussion

obviously the rooms were packed beyond capacity for the workshops as well as the discussion, which is a great sign for San Diego's food movement: people want to learn, to make, and to know. big, big thanks to the people who taught and spoke for sharing your time and wisdom with the community.
•note! we got a recording of the discussion, which we will post when it's edited
•note! for those of you who wanted in on the workshops but didn't get in on time, check out Food Not Lawns' edible city events coming up in September... they have a fermentation workshops among 5 other nights of events: www.sdfoodnotlawns.com, also keep an eye on Roots news, as we have workshops and classes too.

to the businesses that supported the event

especially the linkery and city farmers nursery for hosting the pre-sale and for gobs of supplies and support, and also to blind lady ale house for sending lee along to pour beers with a smile. thanks also to stone brewing co. for the local beer and to jessica kramer and YUM! super foods for the fantastic food! delish! and, over 20 businesses featuring local art and local food generously gave prizes for the raffle.

to everyone who came

thank you for spending the evening with us! we hope you had a wonderful time. please keep in touch with us as we progress along this path of local food and community building. there are some very exciting things happening in this city and it's a great time to get involved with the efforts.

We look forward to seeing you at future events (GP 2010!) and we thank you all for being part of this really exciting process.

Onwards!
